I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Satan desires to destroy and corrupt the way your kids view the world. We understand, however, that when we see the world the way God defines it, we can have life abundantly.

When we look at God’s Word, we see four categories that define God’s plan for humanity. Creation. Fall. Redemption. Restoration.

In this article, we will start with Creation. We know that the truth of creation has been under attack for some time. Ever since Charles Darwin’s “The Origin of the Species” was published in 1859 there has been a public battle regarding when the world and mankind started. Unfortunately, many Christians have abdicated the study and teaching of our origins (which are clearly defined in Genesis chapters 1-2) to secular scientists who have moved beyond describing Darwin’s thoughts as theory and teach it as the fact that all of their concepts are then based on. I am thankful for groups such as Answers in Genesis, founded by Ken Ham. They are the developers of The Creation Museum and The Ark Encounter. If you haven’t been to either of these attractions, I encourage you to put a trip to these Kentucky museums on your summer calendar! When we understand that “science” is really the collection of knowledge, as the Latin root of the word means “to know”, then we can observe the world around us and see God’s handiwork. As Christians, we don’t “check our brains at the door”, but observe and study what God has put around us in the world!

Psalm 19:1-2 declares, “The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.

If our children doubt the truth of “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1), then will they also be prone to question,“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)? In fact, in Hebrews chapter 11, often referred to as “the Hall of Faith”, the author starts the conversation of faith by stating in Hebrews 11:3 “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”

God as Creator is foundational. If we don’t understand that God created us in His image for His glory, then we will miss the fact that we are accountable to Him and there are consequences to not meeting His standards (we will get into that when we discuss the Fall). We see this played out today in post-modernism thought where people “live out their truth” and encourage everyone to “you do you.” If your kids don’t understand God as Creator and the One we are ultimately responsible to answer to, then they could easily commit the greatest idolatry by making themselves their own god and “follow their heart” to do as they please.

Here is an article from Answers In Genesis on Creation. I hope you find it a useful tool to start and continue a conversation with your kids on the foundational truth of creation.

https://answersingenesis.org/creation/

How you view the world matters. Put on the lens of Scripture and see the world the way God intended, and teach your children to do the same! Next time, we will look at the Fall and how it impacts our worldview.

Pastor Randy Calico
Pilot Knob Missionary Baptist Church
